Lesson Study and Learning Study have been implemented increasingly in initial teacher training as well as in continuous professional development in Austria. Universities as well as colleges of teacher education all over Austria make use of Lesson Study in their educational research and they offer courses about Lesson Study on a regular basis.

Lesson Study is used intensively in the context of teacher induction as well as in teaching practice. Local school councils have discovered the potential of Lesson Study and they promote CPD through Lesson Study to replace one-off in-service courses.

A nation-wide networking meeting is organised by the Ministry of Education and Research on an annual basis at the University College of Teacher Education in Carinthia.

Several book publications bout Lesson Study in Austria and Germany in German language are in print.

Centre of Excellence under the auspices of Autonomous Educational Organization “Nazarbayev Intellectual schools” (CoE) has branches in all of the regions of the country, where teacher training courses and workshops are provided by trainers.

Conceptualising Lesson Study as one of the key drivers for the transformation of teaching practice and instrument for teacher learning, CoE has been introducing it since 2012 as one of the concepts within training courses for teachers and school leaders.

With the aim to provide an opportunity for Kazakhstani teachers to learn about Lesson Study and consequently to promote and develop Lesson Study in Kazakhstan CoE has created the website and started the development of necessary guidelines in Kazakh and Russian languages.

As part of the further plans, along with existing activities, CoE is planning:

  • to start organisation in Kazakhstan Lesson Study annual teacher conferences on the regional and national levels in order to provide school leaders and teachers opportunity to share their experience of Lesson study and discuss issues regarding teaching and learning in Kazakhstani schools;
  • to start training school Lesson Study trainers, who will be leading learning within the schools (introducing and facilitating Lesson study in their own schools).

We have recently completed a three-year study (2013-17) supported by a Brunei Research Council (BRC08) grant involving 150 teachers of four curriculum areas from government primary and secondary schools to develop a research-based professional development model for 21st century teaching and learning (21CTL). The model engages teachers in cycles of Lesson Study to design, teach and review learning activities that promote 21st century skill development in the context of the national curriculum. To review the design of the learning situation, teachers collect evidence of gains in student knowledge and capabilities, and evidence of the opportunities provided by the design for students to build the target skills of collaboration, knowledge construction, self-regulation, real-world problem-solving and innovation, the use of ICT for learning and skilled communication. The study sought to identify the necessary conditions for teacher learning, hypothesized to include teacher experience of simultaneous variation with respect to 1) approaches to the design of learning situations, 2) students' responses to the processes and content of those designs, and 3) teachers' interpretations of the student learning outcome.
